I was introduced to the sport of Dragon Boat racing while working a special event as a lifeguard as the safety boat operator for the first Annual Los Angles Dragon Boat Festival in August of 2012. In April (2013) I was asked by Team DPW to paddle with them at the Long Beach Spring race. There, I experienced my first taste of Dragon Boat racing. That got me hooked. A new challenge! July was my next race in Long Beach again, my first international race. In September was my next race another large international race in San Francisco. In October my two sons joined me and participated in a small race in San Diego and another with a lifeguard team at Whittier Narrows Park. Sean was now hooked! In November I qualified to compete in Foshan China, a International Invitational, and represented the only club team from the USA .
Sean, Scott and I were asked to tryout this past February to represent USA National Dragon Boat Team. Scott was not interested in trying out for Team USA because of other interests. Multiple tryouts were held all across the US to pick the best of the best to join the team. Both Sean and I tried out and have been selected to the USA National Dragon Boat Team! This is so exciting for both Sean and I since we have only been paddling less than a year. We have a lot of hard work and training ahead of us to compete at this international level. Sean has qualified for the Premier Team, which is the best at any age. As for myself I have qualified for the Masters Team (40 yrs old and up) and hopefully the Premier Team as well.
In July all team members from across the states will be meeting in Philadelphia for a national team training. The only down side to this opportunity is that we both have to pay for everything, air fare, hotel, food, and our uniforms. Even the team trip to Philadelphia Sean and I are responsible for these expenses. We are looking at about $4,000 each to cover all the expenses to make this dream happen. If you would like to help and support us and the Hope Project please click on the "ways to support" tab. If you have further questions you may contact us by clicking on the "contact" tab.
As Sean and I ask for your support in giving, all monies collected for our dream, Sean and I will give back 5% to the "Hope" Project in Southeast Asia. The "Hope Project" is working with CHILDREN in HUMAN TRAFFICKING also known as SEX SLAVERY. Details of the "Hope Project" are found on the link above.
Please press the BUTTON on the bottom of the page for your support. If you would rather write a check, make checks payable to Steven Evans and write USA Dragon Boat in the memo and send checks to 709 W 6th st, Ontario, Ca 91762.
Thank You Very Much,
Steve & Sean Evans
